With a cohort of engineers and designers from new graduate / apprentice level to technical authorities, the versatile Apollo team covers an exceptionally broad range of engineering designs for renewables clients. These include mooring interfaces and quick connectors; lift rigging, rails and beams; structural foundations for winches, tensioners and carousels; gin poles; back deck handling and overboarding equipment, hydraulic machinery; launch and recovery systems.
Key areas of support
-
Handling system designs
Moving and controlling heavy equipment onboard vessels requires robust and effective systems that must work right first time. Apollo’s design capability has been proven on multiple jobs since our earliest instructions. We produce efficient, workable mechanical concepts and detailed designs to expedite offshore handling operations.
-
Quick connection system (QCS) design & supply
Apollo has designed mechanical connection systems for a range of offshore renewable devices, including floating wind, wave and tidal stream energy converters. These often have complex load regimes in which power take off harmonics interact with the overall environmental loading on the hull or substructure. Apollo’s advanced mechanical engineering team work with customers to develop robust analysis or design bases before tackling the engineering assessment. We also produce original design solutions for QCS , cross fertilising learning from other marine sectors.
-
Integration of third-party equipment into structures
Sound naval engineering practice is vital where clients require 3rd party equipment to be incorporated into their hull or vessel. Designs need to transmit all working loads into the substructure with any under deck strengthening implemented to recognised shipyard standards. Apollo are highly experienced in such activities. Our lead engineers have excellent knowledge of offshore marine standards. We add value by leading the technical discussion with class societies and other verification bodies.
-
Lifting equipment, spreader beams, rigging
Heavy lifts for offshore renewable applications often have unique challenges in terms of hook height and reach, limited clearances, item strength or multi-body dynamics. Bespoke systems may be required to spread the loads and allow for indeterminacy, dynamic amplification and other rigging effects. With a creative approach and sound practical foundation, the Apollo mechanical team will deliver an optimal lifting solution for the task in hand.
-
Innovative design concepts & FEED
Our mechanical designers and engineers thrive on the unusual technical challenge, whether it is a new system for an old problem, or an optimised way of resolving an issue in a new device. We have a way of working that moves concepts through to technology readiness, addressing functionality, survivability, cost and manufacture. Give us a call for innovation and you will immediately have our attention!
-
Component FEA evaluation
Many of our clients know what their design looks like, and require an engineering house to verify its integrity. Apollo will apply relevant calculation and modelling methods to deliver engineering justifications in accordance with industry standards such as ISO, BSI, DNV, LR, BV, AISC, APIand Eurocodes. A range of software applications are supported to allow linear-elastic, plastic, fatigue and fracture evaluations.
