Powered by People: MOC Coordinator Gail Walker

Gail Walker supports engineering change at Sullom Voe Terminal, coordinating the Management of Engineering Change process and helping teams stay organised and on track.

She started her career as a plant inspector, mainly working on pipework and vessels. That hands on experience means she understands how different disciplines come together on a project and why clear communication matters.

She’s also known in the office for her knitting. From seasonal decorations to knitted flowers, her handmade creations regularly appear on desks and bring a bit of extra cheer.

Gail, can you tell us a little about your role at Apollo and how you support our clients’ projects day to day?

I coordinate the Management of Engineering Change process for Sullom Voe Terminal using Maximo. I support engineering meetings and train users on the MOC process.

It’s about making sure change is controlled, tracked properly and clearly communicated.

Project management plays a big part in what you do. What skills do you think are most important for keeping projects on track?

You need to see the bigger picture, but also really listen to what people need. Delivering to customers depends on that.

Good spreadsheets and reliable data are essential. Without them, you can’t stay organised and you can’t deliver properly.

You’ve worked closely with engineers across different disciplines - what’s the most interesting thing you’ve picked up along the way?

I spent many years as a plant inspector, mainly working on pipework and vessels. That was my core expertise.

Working across disciplines now has given me real insight into how all the teams interact on a project. Seeing how everything connects and how communication underpins it all has been fascinating.

Which project has been the most rewarding for you so far, and what made it stand out?

I would have to say the current one. It’s tied into producing green energy and transforming a plant from one use to another.

That brings a whole new set of challenges, technically and from a change management perspective. Being part of that transformation has been very rewarding.

Who has been your biggest mentor or supporter at Apollo, and how have they helped you build confidence in your role?

I can’t say it’s just one person. Andy (Pritchard) and Chiara (Massone) have been superb in their support and belief in me.

That’s given me a massive boost.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in project support or project management within the engineering world?

Listen. Take notes. Get to know the project beyond your actual role.

The more you understand the bigger picture, the more value you can add.
