Apollo’s lifting coordinators play a crucial role in keeping lifting operations safe, structured, and compliant. We kick off our Powered by People series by speaking with Jamie Brand about his secondment at an onshore terminal, the improvements he’s helped implement, and how Apollo supports him while he’s on-site.
What’s your role at the terminal, and what does it involve day-to-day?
As lifting coordinators, we oversee all lifting operations on-site, acting as the focal point for all lifting activities. A key part of our role is reviewing and approving lift plans—making sure they meet the highest safety and procedural standards.
We support major projects by attending logistics meetings and reviewing drawings to ensure incoming equipment is suitable and can be lifted safely. We also work closely with engineers and management, advising them on any lifting-related queries.
Another key responsibility is managing the main rigging contractor, ensuring they have the necessary permits, coordinating their daily operations, and conducting site visits to verify compliance with approved lift plans.
What’s the rotation schedule like?
Our rotation is three weeks on, three weeks off, giving us the best of both worlds. It allows us to focus fully on work while on-site and then enjoy proper time with our families when we’re home.
Simple things like picking up our kids from school on our off-rotation days make a real difference.
What’s been the most rewarding part of this secondment experience?
The impact of our work is clear. The feedback we’ve received has been excellent, and the improvements we’ve made in a short space of time are visible across the terminal. There’s still more to do, and with the workload expected to pick up, we’re looking forward to tackling the challenges ahead.
How does Apollo support you during your time on-site?
Apollo has been behind us from day one. Chris Stuart has been instrumental in our success, providing the support we need to carry out our roles effectively.
Beyond that, the backing from the main office has been outstanding. Andrew Pritchard and Chiara Massone made sure we were fully set up and had everything we needed to hit the ground running. But the support doesn’t stop there—what really stands out is the depth of expertise we can tap into.
Whether it’s technical guidance, industry insights, or operational advice, we have access to specialists across Apollo who are always willing to share their knowledge. That kind of backup is invaluable when working on rotation. No matter the challenge, we know we’ve got a team behind us who can provide the right advice when we need it.
