When production stops, the emissions story continues. Apollo developed a practical emissions forecasting tool that helped a North Sea operator gain a clear view of post-CoP emissions, building confidence in regulatory compliance and creating a reliable way to plan, monitor and reduce environmental impact.
The problem
Decommissioning offshore oil and gas assets brings a new set of environmental challenges. Post-CoP activities, including hydrocarbon freeing, power generation and well plugging and abandonment, all generate emissions.
Operators increasingly need to understand and forecast these impacts with far greater accuracy to support both internal reporting and stewardship expectations. One North Sea operator wanted to build this capability with accuracy and consistency across a diverse UK asset portfolio.
The background
The operator asked Apollo to provide post CoP emissions forecasts for multiple assets. This requirement built on earlier work in an Offshore Asset Decommissioning Study, which had mapped out potential scenarios for providing power post CoP across the operator’s portfolio.
Many of the assets have CoP dates some way into the future, so their decommissioning plans are not yet fully defined. The forecasting model, therefore, must be flexible and able to adapt as plans are developed. Where plans lacked detail, Apollo applied knowledge from decommissioning projects to set robust starting assumptions, ensuring the forecasts remained both realistic and practical.
The process
Apollo partnered with Sustain:able, a specialist in ESG and emissions advisory, to combine technical, operational and environmental expertise. Together, we developed a comprehensive emissions forecasting tool. Unlike static estimates, the tool uses emission factors alongside operational routines and evolving decommissioning plans. This allows the operator to test different scenarios and update forecasts as strategies change, ensuring the model remains flexible and relevant throughout the decommissioning lifecycle.
The solution
The result was a reliable and practical emissions forecasting tool that supports internal reporting, enables targeted monitoring and helps operators reduce environmental impact. It also positions operators to respond to stewardship requirements and future policy developments. The tool equips operators with a forward-looking view they can trust, providing insight at a critical stage in the asset lifecycle
The outcome
The operator gained a clearer understanding of their emissions footprint across their full decommissioning portfolio. This supported more informed planning, strengthened regulatory compliance and reduced environmental risk. The project also highlighted the value of strong partnerships, combining Apollo’s technical expertise with Sustain:able’s ESG insight to deliver a future-ready solution.
