Carbon Capture Transport Consultation

Why Carbon Capture Transport Matters

Decarbonisation commitments are accelerating across the UK and globally, but capturing CO2 is only half the challenge. Getting it from source to storage efficiently, safely, and economically requires specialist transport planning that accounts for geography, infrastructure, regulation, and cost.

Apollo provides end-to-end consultation on CO2 transport, helping emitters, regional bodies, and project developers navigate the complex landscape of pipeline, non-pipeline, and hybrid solutions. Whether you are an industrial emitter exploring your first CCS pathway or a regional authority assembling a decarbonisation plan, Apollo’s consultation service delivers the technical clarity and strategic insight you need.

What Apollo Offers

Our Carbon Capture Transport Consultation is a structured advisory service that takes your project from initial concept through to final investment decision. It draws on Apollo’s deep domain expertise, proven methodologies, and established relationships across the CCS value chain.

Feasibility & Options Studies

We assess the full range of CO2 transport options available to your project, including pipeline, rail, road tanker, and sea, benchmarked against your emission volumes, location, timeline, and commercial objectives. Every study is grounded in real infrastructure data and produces actionable, costed recommendations.

Non-Pipeline Transport (NPT) Advisory

Non-pipeline transport is emerging as a critical enabler for regions without access to the UK’s planned trunk pipeline networks with only 50% of the CO2 from Industrial clusters. . Apollo has delivered the UK’s first large-scale NPT feasibility study, and we help clients understand when NPT makes sense, what modes to combine, and how to aggregate volumes through regional shipping hubs.

Regional CO2 Source Mapping & Aggregation

Using GIS-based analysis and direct emitter engagement, we identify and characterise the CO2 sources across your region, map optimal aggregation points, and design collection networks that balance cost, logistics, and phasing.

Infrastructure & Route Evaluation

Apollo evaluates existing transport infrastructure, including rail corridors, road networks, and brownfield pipeline routes, to find the most efficient and permittable pathways for CO2 movement. We work directly with Network Rail and local authorities to ground our recommendations in operational reality.

Power & Utilities Assessment

Carbon capture, compression, liquefaction, and hydrogen or eFuel production all carry significant electrical loads. Our power option studies analyse grid capacity, renewable integration, and future energy scenarios to ensure your project has a viable, cost-effective power supply.

Stakeholder Engagement & Coordination

Successful CCS projects depend on alignment across emitters, transport providers, storage operators, regulators, and local government. Apollo facilitates and coordinates this engagement, building consensus and de-risking the path to Final Investment Decision (FID).

Cost Estimation & Investment Case Development

Our feasibility work includes the development of cost estimates to support funding applications, business cases, and investor discussions, covering capital expenditure, operating costs, and revenue scenarios for captured CO2 and derivative products such as eFuels.

Our Expertise in Non-Pipeline Transport

While pipelines remain a backbone of CO2 transport, they are not always viable, particularly for dispersed emitters, early-phase projects, or regions distant from planned pipeline corridors. Non-pipeline transport provides the flexibility and scalability that many decarbonisation projects require.

Apollo’s NPT expertise covers the full spectrum of alternative transport modes, including international and coastal shipping, inland barge systems, rail freight, and road tanker logistics. We understand the interplay between capture conditions (pressure, temperature, purity), transport mode constraints, and receiving terminal requirements, and we design solutions that optimise across all three.

Our work integrates NPT with existing infrastructure wherever possible, avoiding unnecessary capital spend and accelerating project timelines.

Pipeline Transport Strategy

For high-volume, long-duration CO2 transport, pipelines offer unmatched efficiency and reliability. Apollo provides consultation on pipeline route selection, capacity planning, and the engineering interfaces between capture plant and pipeline.

We also advise on hybrid approaches, combining pipeline transport for anchor emitters with NPT feeder systems for smaller or more remote sources, maximising regional capture volumes while keeping unit costs manageable.

Carbon Storage & eFuel Opportunities

Effective transport is only valuable if it connects to viable storage or utilisation endpoints. Apollo helps clients understand and access geological storage options, and we identify opportunities for CO2 utilisation in eFuel production, creating carbon-neutral fuels for hard-to-decarbonise sectors such as aviation and maritime.

By incorporating storage and utilisation into our transport studies, we help clients build more compelling investment cases and align with emerging policy incentives for carbon removal and sustainable fuels.

Proven Delivery: The 7CO2 Project

The UK’s first project to explore moving captured carbon without pipelines, unlocking a regional shipping hub and eFuel production for net zero.

The Challenge

The 7CO2 project, part of the Avonmouth Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plan (LIDP), aimed to address the significant challenge of reducing CO2 emissions across the Southwest of England, the Midlands, and Wales. The study explored Non-Pipeline Transport of large-scale CO2 aggregated into a shipping hub to facilitate local and regional decarbonisation, capturing post-combustion emissions from various industrial sources for onward shipment or conversion into eFuels.

The Scale

The 7CO2 hub was envisioned as the UK’s first large-scale NPT CO2 capture and shipping project, with estimated inward investment of up to £1.3 billion for the Bristol region and over £4 billion across the broader Southwest, West Midlands, and Wales.

Apollo’s Role

Apollo undertook a comprehensive feasibility study covering the full engineering building blocks required for the 7CO2 hub. Our work spanned stakeholder engagement, regional CO2 source identification, rail infrastructure evaluation, power option analysis, and cost estimation.

We developed a GIS map to identify and characterise key CO2 emitters, collaborated with Network Rail to optimise rail transport routes, and conducted detailed power supply analysis across renewable, grid, and nuclear options. Our data capture tool was used to engage directly with emitters and align the study with broader regional development goals.

The Outcome

The feasibility study successfully identified the key components and pathways to establish the 7CO2 hub. Apollo’s detailed analysis and stakeholder coordination produced a clear implementation roadmap, supported the development of a Class 5 cost estimate, and formed a comprehensive contribution to the LIDP report. The findings have informed subsequent project stages, positioning the 7CO2 hub to capture and store CO2 emissions while producing carbon-neutral eFuels for aviation and maritime.
